private health insurance cost Australia

How Much Does Private Health Insurance Cost in Australia in 2026?

The price of private health insurance in Australia can change considerably based on a wide range of criteria like age, income, loading, and clinical category. What is important to mention here is the fact that hospital level Basic, Bronze, Silver, and Gold is not indicative of the quality of the insurance but only represents the amount of services included. In Victoria, for instance, one Silver hospital insurance costs $127.82 per month while another one, Silver as well, costs $358.76. Same state, same hospital level, and the second option costs nearly three times as much as the first one.

This is the point where many people get confused concerning the cost of the private health insurance in Australia. “Silver” does not mean any specific price. Instead, it means a minimum list of things insured that should be provided by the government. Two different policies can cover the minimum list and yet be entirely different because of various excesses, extras, and optional inclusions. Therefore, the level indicates the scope of services provided and nothing more. Moreover, with the rise in premiums of 4.41% for 1 April 2026, it becomes crucial to save money.

What really determines the cost you pay?

In terms of Australia’s community rating legislation, an insurer is required to establish a basic rate for a particular policy irrespective of policy, age, health condition, gender and likelihood of claiming. The only legislative allowance is the availability of a 10% discount for those people who buy hospital cover prior to turning 30 years old. It is also prohibited to price based on your health and coverage of a pre-existing condition.

So, what determines the cost? Two factors.

First, the policy itself. The location (state), the tier (the types of clinical care covered), the agreed excess in case of hospital stay and hospital or hospital and extras coverage determine the basic rate and explain the differences among various insurers and states presented further in the tables.

Second, you. Your age, income and Lifetime Health Cover loading factor will change the basic rate. How?

The tier (clinical categories)

There are four tiers of hospital cover: Basic, Bronze, Silver and Gold that are determined by the Australian government. Each tier has to cover the list of clinical categories starting from the smallest one covered in the Basic Tier to the complete list included in the Gold Tier (pregnancy, joint replacement and cataract). What is important here is that the tier is only a floor and not a description of the policy. An insurer may choose to include additional optional clinical categories, change the excess and/or impose restrictions on some services. That is why even policies with the same tier designation could be absolutely different.

Your age

Those who buy a hospital cover before the age of 30 can have a discount up to 10% on the premium (2% for every year below 30), if offered by an insurer. On the contrary, the rebate offered by the Australian Government will increase after reaching 65 and 70 years old respectively.

Your Income

The amount of rebates decreases with increased incomes. About one-fourth of your premium is reimbursed if you are a lower to middle-income earner who is less than 65 years old. If your income exceeds Tier 3 ($158,001 for individuals or $316,001 for families in 2025-2026), then there will be no reimbursement and you pay the complete amount.

Covering Your Needs Without Spending More Than You Can Afford

It all depends on what you are using now or likely to use in the future and working backward to the plan that includes those needs. A 28-year-old patient with no plans for any surgeries has a totally different set of circumstances than a young couple planning a family, whose needs will include Gold-level coverage for obstetrics and the waiting period to be completed much earlier.

Once you have established what the coverage level is, the next step is determining how you can get it at the most favorable price in your state, since there can be a difference of hundreds of dollars per month between insurers even for the same coverage level in the one state.
